Sustainability and Climate Change
Course Description
The aim of this course is to understand how Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies are helping in the fight against Climate Change and issues regarding Sustainability. You will learn about about Blockchain, Climate Change and Sustainability.
Climate Change is an extremely important topic following COP26 in Glasgow in 2021 – this course was designed following an APPG Blockchain meeting in UK Parliament shortly before COP27 in Egypt. The APPG on Blockchain has brought together global perspectives from different institutions, academia, and businesses. Inherent characteristics of Blockchain are detailed with use case examples, and questions are explored about whether Blockchain is sustainable itself, and what is being done to help in this space.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, the learner should be able to
Critically evaluate if Blockchain can ensure Sustainability in energy use, or if it causing a Sustainability crisis
- Discuss how Blockchain help to solve the Climate Change crises, and a more efficient use of natural resources (Land, oceans, air, etc.)
- List of how can data mining on Blockchains become sustainable or ‘green’? (e.g., ‘green data’ where heat from server parks and mining fuels smart grids)
- Describe other Sustainability issues associated with Blockchains? E.g., Carbon emission trade using Blockchain
