This course critically examines whether and how autonomous weapons should be employed in combat and debates the appropriateness of using autonomous weapons in conflict.
The expert contributions in this course come from the United Kingdom – academia, NGOs (non-governmental organisations), industry, and campaign organisations, and the debates of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Artificial Intelligence (APPG AI) of the UK Parliament.
After completing this course, the learner should be able to
- Analyse how the employment of autonomous weapons has changed as a result of breakthroughs in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI).
- Provide examples of how AI is (or could be) applied to military and autonomous weapons.
- Examine the dangers while outlining options for safer military responses.
- Critically review the guidelines and practises for employing autonomous weapons in combat.
